Returning to Exercise After COVID-19

While it may not be on the front page of every news site anymore, COVID-19 is still definitely out there. The severity of COVID-19 can differ from person to person, but it can make returning to your training quite difficult after recovering. For some people, there are long-lasting effects, whereas for others it only takes them out of action for a week or so. Either way, you should take it easy as you return to training. We’ve put together a few tips to help you out with picking up your exercise once you’re feeling better.

Every body is different

As we said, each person’s COVID-19 symptoms can be very different. While it may take someone else 10 days to feel fully recovered, it may take you several weeks. Your symptoms might be mild, or they might be severe. You should listen to what your body is telling you – even if your test results come back negative after a week of sickness, you shouldn’t be training if you’re still feeling run down or fatigued. 

Be patient with your body

You’ve been sick – you can’t expect your body to do the things it could a few weeks ago when you were at your peak. Depending on how long you had off, you might have to recondition your body to do what it’s supposed to do. You may have lost a bit of strength, stability or control in your muscles, so incorporating some prehab and/or mobility exercises into your routine as you begin to train again could help to rebuild this and ensure you don’t overload and injure yourself. 

Start slowly

If you go too hard too fast you’re likely to just about immediately burn yourself out. Picking up at the level where you left off probably isn’t the smartest idea. Start with some lighter training sessions – whether that means shorter or less intense is up to you and what you feel your body can cope with right now.

Take the time to recover properly
